A City of Contrasts and Endless Energy

Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic and diverse cities in the world, where futuristic skyscrapers stand alongside ancient temples and urban energy meets lush natural escapes. I spent New Year’s Eve 2024 at the harbor in Causeway Bay, watching the city light up with one of the most spectacular fireworks displays I’ve ever seen. The reflections on Victoria Harbour, the excitement in the air and the energy of the crowd made it an unforgettable way to welcome the new year.

What makes Hong Kong so special is its endless variety. One moment, you’re navigating the lively markets of Mong Kok, surrounded by neon lights and the aroma of freshly cooked street food. The next, you’re taking in the breathtaking skyline from Victoria Peak or escaping to the quiet beaches and islands just a short ferry ride away.

Beyond its dazzling cityscape, Hong Kong is a paradise for food lovers. From traditional dim sum and noodle stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, the culinary scene is as diverse as the city itself. Whether it’s taking the Star Ferry across the harbor, exploring the historic streets of Central, or hiking in the lush green hills, Hong Kong always offers something new to discover.

Hong Kong is a city that never stands still, yet it also offers moments of calm amidst the fast pace. Whether you come for the nightlife, the food, the culture or the nature, it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave. For me, it’s one of the most exciting and unforgettable cities in the world.

Die entscheidenden Details für eine Reise, die sich von Anfang an richtig anfühlt.

01 Key facts about the city

The flight duration from Austria or Germany to Bali is usually about 15 to 17 hours, depending on the flight route and the layover. Bali is located in Southeast Asia and is a rather distant travel destination from Europe, which results in a longer flight time.

Most flights from Europe to Bali have layovers in major international hubs such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Dubai. These layovers can affect the total travel time.

02 Vom Flughafen ins Zentrum

There are several transportation options from Denpasar Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Canggu.

  1. Taxi: Taxis are available directly outside the airport. It's advisable to use the official Bluebird taxis, which have a fixed price and operate with a meter. Make sure to clarify the fare before the ride to avoid misunderstandings.
  2. Private Driver: You can also book a private driver or a transfer service in advance. This is a convenient option, as the driver will pick you up directly at the airport and take you straight to your accommodation in Canggu.
  3. Ride-Sharing Services: Ride-sharing services like Grab or Gojek are widely used in Bali and often offer more affordable prices than traditional taxis. You can download the respective app and book a ride to your destination in Canggu.
  4. Shuttle Service: Some hotels and accommodations also offer a shuttle service from the airport. Inquire in advance if your accommodation offers this service and how to book it.

The journey time from Denpasar Airport to Canggu is approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

03 Getting around Hong Kong

1. MTR (Mass Transit Railway)

The MTR is Hong Kong’s subway system, covering almost all major areas, including the airport and border crossings to Mainland China.

2. Buses

Hong Kong has an extensive bus network, including double-decker buses. They connect places not covered by the MTR, such as Stanley or Sai Kung.

Tips: try to get a seat on the upper deck for great views.

3. Trams (Ding Ding)

On Hong Kong Island, you can ride the iconic double-decker trams. They’re slow but charming and inexpensive.

Best for: Exploring Central, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay at a leisurely pace.

4. Ferries

Ferries like the Star Ferry connect Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Other ferries go to the outlying islands like Lantau and Cheung Chau.

Why ride? Affordable with stunning harbor views.

These small buses are great for reaching areas not served by larger vehicles. Green minibuses follow fixed routes, while red ones are more flexible.

Caution: They can be fast and confusing for first-timers.

04 Do I need a visa?

As an Austrian, German, or European citizen, you generally do not need a visa for a tourist stay in Indonesia, including Bali and Canggu, if you plan to stay in the country for less than 30 days.

This applies to travel for tourism, business visits, cultural activities, and social visits. It is important to note that your passport must be valid for at least six months upon entry.

If you wish to stay in Indonesia for longer than 30 days, there are various visa options you can consider, such as the "Visa on Arrival" or a "Social-Cultural Visit Visa." For longer stays or other purposes, it is advisable to inquire about visa regulations and requirements in advance and, if necessary, apply for the appropriate visa before your trip.

05 When is the best time to travel?

The best time to visit Canggu and Bali is generally during the dry season, which lasts from April to October. During this period, the weather is warm and sunny with less rain, offering ideal conditions for outdoor activities, beach visits, and exploring the surroundings.

The months of July and August are particularly popular with tourists, as many schools and universities have holidays and many people take the opportunity to travel to Bali. During these months, it can therefore be a bit busier, especially in the most popular tourist spots.

The off-season from November to March brings more rain and occasional monsoons. The rainfall can be heavy, but generally, it doesn't last all day. However, this time of year is a good opportunity to find cheaper prices for accommodation and activities and to explore the less frequented places on Bali.

It is important to note that the climate in Canggu and Bali generally is tropical, so it can be warm all year round. If you want to avoid the crowds of tourists but still have good weather, the months of April, May, June, and September might be the best choice for your trip.

06 What languages do they speak?

In Bali, and thus also in Canggu, the official languages are Bahasa Indonesia and Balinese. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of Indonesia and is spoken by most inhabitants. Balinese is the regional language spoken by the Balinese population in Canggu and other parts of Bali.

As Bali is a popular tourist destination, many locals in Canggu also speak English, especially in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, and shops. English is often used as a lingua franca to communicate with international visitors.

It is always helpful to learn some simple words and phrases in Bahasa Indonesia, such as "Hello" (Halo), "Thank you" (Terima kasih), "Please" (Silahkan), and "Excuse me" (Maaf), as this is often greatly appreciated by the locals.

07 What is the official currency?

The official currency in Indonesia, and thus also in Bali, including Canggu, is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The currency is issued in coins and banknotes of various denominations.

It is advisable to obtain some Indonesian Rupiah before your trip to Canggu, as not all places accept credit cards or other currencies. You can exchange your currency at banks, money changers, or ATMs. ATMs are easily accessible in Canggu and often accept international cards.
